Directions:
In the likeness of Schoolhouse Rock, Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing and Brainpop, you are going to create grammar podcasts to teach your classmates a variety of grammatical concepts.
Using a grammar pre-assessment test (no, the results do not count toward your grade), Mrs. Dennison and I will be assigning you a partner and a grammatical concept like capitalization, gerunds or apostrophes. Over several days of in-class research and planning, your partnership will become best friends with that grammatical concept. In other words, you will get to know everything about that subject by answering question words about it and how it is used like who, what, when, where, why, and how.
After researching and taking extensive notes about your grammar concept using the materials and websites provided, you and your partner will complete a storyboard and script to detail what information, images and sound you will include in your podcast and in what order.
Next, your partnership will work together during five class days to piece together audio (script and sound) and images (photographs, diagrams, etc.). Your podcast should be produced with your classmates and their needs in mind. After all, they are your audience. Additionally, your podcast should maintain a sense of purpose and remain focused for between one and two minutes.
Finally, your partnership will present your podcast to the class. Following the presentations, you will take a post-assessment test to assess your knowledge of all podcast grammatical concepts. Use your grammar weaknesses sheet to identify which podcasts in particular you will need to study.
Documents:
There are four documents students and teaches will need to recreate this lesson. The first is the GrammarPodcastDirections.pdf, which is what you just read in the section above. The second is the list of GPGramaticalConcepts.pdf. The third is the GPcalendar.pdf we followed while completing the assignment. The fourth is the GPrubrics.pdf. Read through all four documents before you begin.
Before your students begin this units they need to do some prep work. Here is a GPtasklist.pdf that includes researching, scriptwriting, storyboarding, searching for sounds and images that each partnership should complete before beginning the podcast.
