Chicago: 1949 vs. 1999

Our third grade class went to the Chicago Historical Society and researched information to discover how Chicago has changed in fifty years. We looked at magazines, newspapers and photographs from 1949. Each group found artifacts to support our ideas and made the following conclusions:

Transportation

Conclusion:

Transportation is a faster way to get around then walking. There are many forms such as trolleys, motorcycles, roller blades and bicycles. Some forms have changed a lot since 1949,and some have changed a little. The biggest change was air travel.

Sports

Conclusion:

Sports from 1949 had similarities and differences from the sports we have today. Most sports teams were similar to the sports teams we have today. The football helmets were very different. Instead of being made out of metal, like they are today, they were made out of leather. Also, the football shoulder pads were smaller.

Food

Conclusion:

Back in 1949 the prices were different. People didn't care about their health, how much fat they ate, and they only cared about the cost. Some companies are still in business such as Cherrios, Pillsberry, and Kellogg's. Some foods are still popular such as grape jam, cherries, tomato's, spinach and Dill pickles.

Buildings

Conclusion:

A smaller house then, would have been tiny now because small houses would have cost a lot less then, than they do now. In 1949 owning a two bedroom home would be really great!
