A Day in the
Pilsen
Neighborhood

We are third grade students who live in Wilmette, Illinois. It is a northern suburb of Chicago located on the west coast of Lake Michigan. Chicago is a large city which was built by many different ethnic groups immigrating to this area.

Our class spent time visiting a neighborhood in the city of Chicago that was settled by immigrants. We explored this neighborhood to find the similarities and differences between our neighborhood and the neighborhood we visited. We learned that all communities have the same basic needs: food, shelter, employment opportunities, medical care, religious institutions, and places for leisure activities. In addition we learned that immigrants tend to settle in a neighborhood with people like themselves to surround themselves with others who share a common language and common cultural experiences so that they will feel comfortable while getting used to a new country.
