My Interpretation

Presented by: Laura I.

Title of Artwork: Covered Compote

Year of Artwork: 1845
Artist: American - Probably New Englander
Dates of Artist's Birth and Death: Unknown
Nationality: New England American
Materials Used: Pressed Glass

My Description: Hmmmm........ It looks like pressed glass. It has a circle shape to it. On the top of it is a Native American. There is a whitish clear color to it. Also, it has a mountain, cabin, and tree design. I think the bowl is beautiful pressed glass. It also has a texture to it. It also has an opening that I can see. I think it looks hidden.
The Big Idea: Such glass was usually owned in Paris. Vases of this type were filled with celery or fruit. They were displayed prominently at either end of a dining table during the evening meal.
The Chicago Connection: I think the compote bowl relates to Chicago and Illinois because it has cabins and mountains and prairies on the round part of it. I think the vase has something to do with Illinois because it has lots of design that relate to Illinois. Illinois at one time was considered the wilderness. People missed the wilderness and put wilderness designs in their homes.
