Our Famous Women Riddles

Each of us studied the biography of a famous woman we chose.
We shared a lot of ideas with each other about the woman we studied.
Have fun with the riddles we created and test your knowledge about the famous women that have made a difference in our world.
(It may help to write your answers on a piece of paper
as you test yourself.)

1) In 1897 I was born. I was a very famous African American singer. I was the first black person to sing a lead role at the Metropolitan Opera House. I enjoyed singing old slave songs.

2) I had three different names in my life--a public name, a secret name, and an American name that I received when I was kidnapped and eventually christened with my American name.

3) I stood up for woman’s rights and I was against slavery. I was an African American woman and had 5 children. There are many books about my life. President Lincoln in 1884.

4) I have a stuffed animal named Jubilee. I helped save the chimpanzees. In 1957 I became a scientist. I still go around the world to teach and make speeches to kids.

5) I was known as the fastest woman in the world. I died at a young age. Some people remember me because I had 4 inch long nails.

6) I wrote books about slavery. I was the sixth child out of eleven children. One of the books I wrote was called Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

7) I created the first real sample of pure radium and won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903.

8) I was a famous artist who most often painted families. I lived in France, and I also became close friends with the artist Edgar Degas.

9) I was 13 when I became the youngest gymnast in the United States history to capture the All-Around title in the Olympics.

10) I played lacrosse, baseball and I skateboarded. I was a coach. I became the wife of a president.

11) My books became a regular show on TV about living on the prairie.

12)In my childhood my family called me Martha. When I was older I had 2 husbands. I could shoot as good as any man.

13) I was the first African-American to get a flying license. I also worked as a manicurist.

14) I am the author and illustrator of Peter Rabbit and also Benjamin Bunny.

15) I am famous for my singing and dancing and no one really knows I have dyslexia.

16) I helped guide explorers into the western United States. In 2000, the US government made a coin with my image on it.

17) I was the first woman to pilot a plane across the Atlantic Ocean.

18) I wrote the Anne of Green Gable series.

19) I am a marine biologist and a great snorkeling diver and discovered new animals.

20) I am a children's book author but I had trouble reading when I was in first grade.

21) I was an artist and I like to paint flowers. I died in 1986 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

22) I starred in the movie “The color Purple” and was the first black woman to have her own talk show.

23) I am in love with nature. I wrote a book called Silent Spring. It stopped the poisoning of our world. I have two other siblings.

24) I wrote a lot of children’s books about families and was the first registered woman to vote in Concord.

25) I am the youngest Gold Medalist in the Olympics.

26) I married Prince Charles and had 2 boys. I died when I was young.

27) I built the Hull House for immigrant children. My mother died when I was only 2 years old.

28) I was 15 when I became part of the USA women’s soccer team.

29) I was born in 1847 on July 24. I began a toy factory and my toys are still made today. My first toy animal was Elephant. I had polio when I was 18 months old. I died in 1909 when I was 61 years old. My stuffed animals are very famous today.

30) I loved to run. I won 3 gold medals at the Olympics even though everyone thought I wouldn’t be able to walk after I got polio. I had 19 older brothers and sisters.

31) I only ate macaroni and cheese when I was a teenager. When I began to train with my coach he made me eat more healthy foods and more meat. I went on to become an Olympic medalist in ice skating.

32) I am an author of many children’s books and I love writing stories with a good plot. One of them was called A Hot and Cold Summer. I married a man named Uri.

33) I was on my way to winning an Olympic Medal when I was attacked on the ice.

34) I married a president who had polio. I became the first lady and was able to help many disadvantaged people in need.

35) I am the wife of a president and before we met I was a teacher/librarian. I love books and children.
