Recycling:
•Cafeteria: Recycle containers are used each day, and the cafeteria personnel also recycle cardboard, and containers, metal, plastic and paper.
We also have a large water cooler so students can take water as needed and not bring in plastic bottles of water to school.
•Rooms: All rooms (class, administration, teachers lounge) have blue recycle containers and both paper, plastic and aluminum can be put in these. The janitors collect each day and take to recycle area. Big blue recycle bins are in hallways.
•Our Tech Department collects for recycling or careful disposal: We have several stations for recycling printer cartridges, floppy disks, CDs/DVDs, video and audio tapes, batteries of all types, chargers, cables, cell phones, and laser toners.
•Paper for Others: Last year we collected paper used on one side for Paper for Africa. This year our program is Paper for Others and is conducted by the Tech Department.
•Recycle Shoes: We worked with SWANCC and for the third consecutive year we conducted a program to recycle shoes working with Nike.

Reusing:
•Teachers are encouraged to use both sides of paper. If the lesson materials can be printed on both sides they do. We have a re-chargeable battery program for our school digital cameras.
Students are allowed to have reusable water bottles and refill at home or from drinking fountains.

Reducing:
•All staff is aware of using less materials like paper, and efforts to use electronic communication to peers and parents works well. An example would be using web sites and electronic newletters to send home information.
•Teachers try to implement using less lights, and turning lights off in rooms when students are not there.

Communication:
We are now sending electronically our Clarion and Scoop. We have converted from paper. In most issues we feature helpful suggestions about the environment and things to do at home. These are put in by the PTA liason folks, Sharon Krone and Lisa Kampwirth. For example they sent information to parents about how to recycle Christmas trees.

School Events:

•We have in the past participated in Environmental Awareness Week, but this year our program features different eco-friendly themes each month. For example, November was Waste Not, and we offered Waste-Free Lunch Tips. December was 10 Ways to Green Your Holidays.
•This year we will continue to celebrate the Earth with Earth Week, April 20, activities and an assembly. Last year we featured Tiny Family Footprint, Bike or Walk to School Week, Make a Change at Home, grade level activities like cleaning up the campus, Waste Free Lunch Day, and Arbor Day.
•At our Central School Store, for two years, we have sold red bags for carrying groceries and also reusable lunch containers with a freezer top. These are designed for keeping a lunch cool and can be washed in a dishwasher. Prior to Winter Break we sold LED lites for Christmas trees.
•Central School has a wonderful garden with programs thoughout grade levels that feature eco-friendly lessons.
•Two years ago we planted a tree in the Kindergarden area, last year we planted flowers as a 3rd grade project, and this year we plan to plant some bushes around Fort Central.
