Wilmette Community
Wilmette, Illinois, USA

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan 15 miles north of Chicago's Loop, Wilmette is one of the most desirable residential communities in the suburban metropolitan area. The year-round beauty of the lake, gracious, tree-lined neighborhoods, and pleasant shopping districts mark Wilmette as an outstanding place to live.

The village is named for French Canadian trader Antoine Ouilmette, who settled here in the 1820's. Incorporated in 1872, the village today encompasses 5.4 square miles with a population of 27,651 (2000 Census). Direct rail, rapid transit, and bus service allow residents to enjoy Chicago's limitless cultural, business, retail, and educational opportunities. Other amenities include an extensive parks and recreation program for children and adults, including an 18-hole golf course, managed by the Wilmette Park District. In addition, the Wilmette Public Library is highly utilized and comprehensive.

Given the advanced academic credentials of its residents, it is not surprising that quality education is strongly supported. Local property taxes account for almost 80 percent of WPS39's funding, with the remainder coming from state and federal sources.

Citizens of District 39 established a non-profit Educational Foundation and a Community Review Committee (CRC). Governed by an independent Board of Trustees, the Foundation and the CRC's continuing missions are to expand, enrich, and complement educational opportunities for the students, staff, and community.
