Step by Step: Planning a Tiered Lesson

Text Box: Group 2
Using precut geometric shapes that are equilateral, fold more than one line of symmetry and draw a line. Each line of symmetry should be drawn with a different color.
Text Box: Group 3
Create a simple design using geometric shapes (pattern blocks). Create a kaleidoscope effect with 2 mirrors and determine how many lines of symmetry are seen. Continue with 3 and then 4 mirrors.
Text Box: Group 1
Using precut geometric shapes and common shapes, fold and draw a line of symmetry. Color just one side of the shape.
Text Box: Initial Common Experience
Showing various folded shapes (folded once) and pictures of butterflies, and other objects of nature, discuss and practice in whole group lines of symmetry.
Text Box: Think About Your Students
(pre-assessment)
Tiering will be done according to readiness and level of knowledge and application of geometry skills. Pre-assessment is a paper-pencil geometry pretest and observing students during introductory lesson on symmetry.

Text Box: Identify Focus
(Learning outcome)
Students will add to their understanding of lines of symmetry as they use their knowledge to identify and make lines of symmetry in different shapes and examples.
